— Bernama

Menteri letak jawatan selepas komen tugasnya mudah

- AFP

Kallang on Crocs radar despite Turtles rebuff

FAS hopes to strike a deal with Terengganu FA on securing midfielder’s release

KUCHING: The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) has not given up hope yet of signing home-grown talent Joseph Kallang to play for the Crocs in the new season.

FAS’ recent efforts to bring the influential midfielder back from Terengganu to add more bite to Sarawak coach Mohd Zaki Shiekh Ahmad’s squad had been to no avail as the East Coast State FA refused to let him go. Kallang’s contract with the Turtles still has another year to run.

However, it is learnt FAS will be making a second attempt to negotiate Kallang’s return to Sarawak with the Terengganu FA.

A source said the negotiation would focus solely on the remaining oneyear contract and wages.

Although the bargaining is not likely to hold out much of a chance for Kallang’s release, it is understood FAS is not throwing in the towel yet but has instead come up with the offer of a “better deal” to secure the midfielder’s return.

Last week, the Terrengganu FA reportedly made a direct call to a local daily newspaper, confirming it would not release Kallang.

Its president, Che Mat Che Jusoh, said the Sarawakian was still very much needed by the Turtles in the Super League and there were no issues to discuss vis-a-vis Kallang’s release.

A glimmer of hope for the Crocs is that Kallang himself has expressed an interest to return.

Revealing this to the Borneo Post yesterday, he said: “I want to play for the Crocs if they want my service. I still want to don Sarawak colours.”

‘Student caned for different reason’

KUALA LUMPUR: The caning of a boy for bringing non-halal food to school in Kuching took a new twist after the school assistant denied caning the 10-year-old boy for it.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said he had received a report from Sarawak’s Education Department which stated that the school administrator caned the boy for another reason.

“From investigations, it was found that although the boy did bring non-halal food to the school – fried rice with pork sausages – the senior school administrator denied caning the boy for it,” he said when met by reporters at the Parliament lobby here.

Wee also told reporters that there was no written circular to ban students from bringing non-halal food to school.

“However, students should be tolerant and take care of the sensitivities of others,” he added.

On Wednesday (Nov 3), the boy’s mother, Angela Jabing claimed that her 10-year-old son was caned by a school’s senior assistant for bringing non-halal food to school.

She stated that on Oct 15, she had prepared fried rice with non-halal sausages for her son to bring to school for his recess, and was shocked to learn that he was punished and caned 10 times on the palm for bringing the food.

She went to the school to clarify the matter on Oct 19 but was not satisfied with the verbal explanation received and thus demanded for a written explanation.

However, the letter did not answer her question on why her son had to be caned 10 times for just eating fried rice with non-halal sausages.

Angela, who happened to be Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak Women exco member, brought the matter to the knowledge of the local media at a press conference which was also attended by PKR Sarawak Women leaders on Nov 3.

According to Wee, there seemed to be two conflicting reports on the incident now.

Because of this, he said the ministry had instructed for a thorough investigation on the matter and he also hoped the parents can come out and help with the investigation.

He also implied that the case might be ‘politically motivated’. He said: “I understand that the parent has a political background.”

Meanwhile, PKR Sarawak Women will hold another press conference today at the party’s Stampin division office to comment on the latest developments.

Efforts to contact Angela for her response to Wee’s statement were futile as she could not be reached.

A special meeting was also expected to be held today to settle the matter involving all parties concerned, such as the boy’s parents, school board committee, school authority, headmaster, Parent-Teacher Association

(PTA), and the senior assistant.

The timing and the location of the meeting was however not publicly revealed.

BN not into making empty promises — DPM

GALAS: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is not into making empty promises and has always strived to fulfil what has been pledged to the people, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

The claims by the opposition parties, accusing the BN making empty promises, were therefore baseless, he added.

“Kelantan executive council member Datuk Husam Musa, in (a report by) Harakah, accused me of being a ‘munafik’ (hypocrite) because the promise for a bridge in Manik Urai has not yet been fulfilled.

“I would like to stress that the BN does not make empty promises. We will implement the project.

“At that time when we made the promise, the cost of the bridge was only RM7 million but when we called for a tender, it has increased to RM17 million. Although this is a huge amount, we are capable of implementing it.

We have asked the Treasury to make the approval,” he said at the meet-the-people at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina here yesterday.

He said the opposition had also been making similar accusations and raising doubts when he announced the first people’s housing project for Kelantan, costing RM180 million, recently.

“We want to bring development but they want to cast doubts about it; this is ill intention. If one really looks at this, the Kelantan PAS government should be held responsible for not building the bridge in the first place,” he said.

Muhyiddin acknowledged that Kelantan did make some progress but said that most of it was due to the assistance from the federal government.

“I’m aware that in Galas, there is still more to be done but the question is, who is in a better position to fulfil the needs of the people? The PAS government has no money and has to borrow from the federal government,” he said.

He called on the Galas voters to vote wisely  come  polling  day  for   the    constituency’s   by-election today.

“We are prepared to bring major changes to Kelantan and a victory for the BN’s candidate today will be a clear sign that Kelantan is ready for such change,” he said.

The by-election, which is called, following the death of incumbent MP Chek Hashim Sulaima on Sept 27, will see a straight fight between BN’s Abdul Aziz Yusoff and PAS’ Dr Zulkefli Mohamed. — Bernama

Govt to act on high price of imported mutton

KUALA LUMPUR:  The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is to meet wholesalers today on the high price of imported Australian mutton which retails at RM19 per kg, RM2 above the ceiling price.

Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday the ministry might review the ceiling retail price of RM17 in view of the high wholesale price for the product.

“Due to the high wholesale price, retailers are forced to sell imported Australian mutton at RM19 per kg,” he told reporters after a visit to the Sentul market here to ensure that controlled items were being sold at the set prices for Deepavali which falls on Friday.

Ismail Sabri expressed satisfaction with the prices of the 14 other controlled items set for 10 days from today in view of the Deepavali festive season.

These items include chicken, local bone-in mutton, chicken eggs, red chillies, tomatoes, Indian small red onions, imported potatoes and Australian dhall.

“We impose price control during festive seasons because traders are likely to raise prices due to the higher demand then.

“I believe the demand for dhall will rise (during the Deepavali season), so we impose the price control,” he said.

Ismail Sabri said 1,600 monitoring officers and 2,000 enforcement officers had been deployed to check on the prices of the controlled items nationwide for the 10 days.

He also reminded traders to display the pink tags for the prices of the controlled items to enable consumers differentiate them from the ordinary goods, saying that offenders would be prosecuted.

He advised the people to lodge reports on any misconduct by traders via the hotline 1-800-88-6800 or email eaduan@kpdnkk.gov.my. — Bernama

Dr Rayong accepted into BN fold

KUCHING: Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa is now officially a BN man, after more than four years as an independent.

Yesterday, he attended his first BN pre-Council meeting, which is usually held a day before the State Legislative Assembly sitting, at the PBB headquarters here.

Dr Rayong has been knocking on BN’s door after he won Engkilili in 2006.

Reached for his comments, Dr Rayong said he was very happy to  finally become a BN backbencher.

“The Chief Minister (Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) declared that I am a BN member during the meeting… now that I am accepted into the BN, I can do my work smoothly as people will no longer have doubts over my position,” he said.

Dr Rayong added that his application to join SUPP was approved by the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) last Sept 20.

“From my understanding, there were no objections against me to join SUPP,” he said.

Dr Rayong was formerly the pro tem deputy president of the proposed Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) which had its application turned down by the Registrar of Societies.

In 2006, he stood under the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) ticket and he defeated Jonathan Krai Pilo (BN-SUPP) by a slim 426-vote majority in a straight fight.

After his win, he declared his intention to join the BN and was often seen mingling around with BN leaders.

He was also accorded privileges such as presenting minor rural project (MRP) grants in his constituency.

He had previously submitted his membership application to join SUPP but the move was opposed by several

SUPP leaders in Engkilili, including former assemblyman Toh Heng San who represented the area from 1991 to 2006.

Suggestions then started to surface over possible seat-swapping arrangement with other BN component parties to resolve the problem, but this was also opposed by SUPP leaders in Engkilili.

Last Oct 17, Utusan Borneo reported that Dr Rayong’s SUPP membership application had been accepted and approved.

It quoted SUPP Engkilili secretary Nyambong Maweng as saying that he had received a letter from SUPP headquarters to inform the branch of Dr Rayong’s membership status.

Nyambong claimed that the letter also mentioned that Dr Rayong is the best candidate for BN and SUPP in Engkilili for the state election which is due in nine months time.

Bakong longhouse to get 7km tar-sealed road

BELURU: The 100-door Rumah Aji in Sungai Selepin, Bakong sub-district, can look forward to a 7km tar-sealed road when the Miri-Beluru road project takes off next year.

The RM13.2 million project has been approved under the National Key Result Area (NKRA) list of projects for Marudi constituency, said its assemblyman cum Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supplies)
Sylvester Entri Anak Muran yesterday.

“The present bumpy and slippery road condition will be a thing of the past as the tar-sealed road to the longhouse has been approved,” he said when officiating at the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Family Day cum Aerobicthon function at SK Sungai Selepin.

The road upgrading is high on the  locals’ wish list, and this was also conveyed to Datuk Shahlan Ismail, Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, during his visit there last year.

Entri said these are part of the infrastructure projects coming their way under the government’s rural development drive.

Also in the pipeline is  water supply from the reticulation system to  six longhouses in Bukit Peninjau and Sungai Selepin. The project is expected to take off when the Public Works Department put it up for tender.

“This will complete the target for longhouse and settlements in Bakong and Peninjau areas to have water, electricity and road accessibility,” he said, calling on locals to give  full support and co-operation to facilitate implementation of these projects.

On education, he said rural students can excel with support and encouragement of parents and teachers.

Entri threw the gauntlet to SK Sungai Selepin to produce straight As students in coming years, adding that he was supportive of their plans to improve infrastructures such as covered walkways and fencing.

The assistant minister, who established an annual education excellence incentive award, said it was meant to encourage students to strive for excellence as only those who scored  straight As in the UPSR, PMR, SPM or STPM are eligible.

“This incentive awards are open not only to those in Marudi constituency but Baram district which included schools from as far as Bario, where those eligible would get RM50 for each subject with distinction,” he said.

Earlier, headmaster James Nibong and PTA chairman Pangang Ambau called for assistance from Entri to help ring up the school compound with proper fencing and construction of a covered walkway.

In response, Entri approved a RM5,000 MRP grant to the PTA, and told them to submit the project proposal and costing for him to act on.

Anwar given till Nov 18 to file affidavit-in-reply

KUALA LUMPUR: The Syariah Appeals Court here yesterday gave Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim until Nov 18 to file an affidavit-in-reply to a notice issued by the Federal Territories (FT) chief syarie prosecutor and two others in connection with his appeal on a ‘qazaf’ case.

Its chief registrar Abdul Razali Kefli set the date after meeting counsel Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar and Roslizam Rahim, who represented FT chief syarie prosecutor Shamsuddin Hussain, FT Islamic Religious Department director (Jawi) Datuk Che Mat Che Ali and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir
Baharom and Anwar’s counsel Dorina Abdullah.

Zainul said the notice of appeal filed by Anwar, who is also the Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh, did not follow the right procedures.

Anwar, 63, on April 23 had filed the appeal after the Syariah High Court dismissed his application to initiate ‘qazaf’ (false accusation) proceedings against his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

On May 14, Shamsuddin, Che Mat and Jamil Khir, as the applicants, had applied to strike out Anwar’s appeal on the grounds that his notice of appeal was defective. On Jan 7, Anwar had applied to the Syariah

High Court to compel the trio, who he had named as the respondents, to initiate prosecution proceedings against Mohd Saiful, citing that the latter had made false sodomy accusations about him (Anwar).

On Feb 9, the respondents had filed a preliminary objection against Anwar’s ‘qazaf’ application citing that the Syariah High Court did not have jurisdiction to hear an alleged sodomy case as this came under the purview of the civil criminal court.

‘Penan lifestyle, handicraft can be tourist attractions’

KUALA LUMPUR: The lifestyle of the Penan community in Sarawak and their handicrafts could be developed as tourist attractions to help boost the state’s tourism sector, Datuk Billy Abit Joo (BN-Hulu Rajang) said yesterday.

As such, he said several Penan villages in Sarawak should be preserved and maintained, while enabling tourism activities to be conducted.

With such tourism activities, he said the Penan community could also learn a thing or two about the modern lifestyle.

“I’m sure they would want to enjoy a more comfortable life and get involved in modern agriculture, like the Malay community.

“They do not want to be left out. With better living conditions, they will be able to enjoy proper meals and have enough money to spend at the market or to go to the hospital,” he said when debating the Budget 2011 at the Dewan Rakyat here.

Meanwhile, Datuk Kamarul Baharin Abbas (PKR-Teluk Kemang), in his debate speech, proposed to the government to compel statutory bodies to declare the profits they made from investments.

“This will give some kind of assurance to the investors,” he said, adding that public-listed companies should also adopt a similar approach and declare their profits to Bursa Malaysia. — Bernama

BN’s Abdul Aziz to capitalise on home ground advantage

GUA MUSANG:  Barisan Nasional candidate Abdul Aziz Yusof will use the advantage of being born in Gua Musang to win the hearts of the voters in the Galas state constituency to ensure that BN recaptures the seat.
Ab Aziz, 49, who is the Gua Musang Umno secretary, had served as manager of the Operations Office of the Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Kesedar) and had a better understanding of the problems of the residents in the area.

“I have been here (in Galas) longer compared to the PAS candidate who spent more time in Gua Musang. I am personally involved with the community and my previous post (in Kesedar) required me to be close to the rakyat and this is an advantage for me,” he                    said.

He told reporters this after the completion of the nomination process for the by-election for the Galas state seat at the Gua Musang Land and District Office, here yesterday.

He said that since he was announced BN candidate, he and his family had been physically and mentally prepared to face the 10-day campaigning period before polling day on Nov 4.

“I intend to meet as many voters in the Galas constituency and InsyaAllah (God willing), I will move from one village to another,” he said.

He also expressed confidence in the BN winning the by-election based on the change in sentiments shown by the people in the area compared to the general election in 2008.

He said the evaluation was based on the support and response given by the people during the visit by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin when launching the Public Housing Project at Taman Wangi here last Sunday.

Meanwhile, PAS candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamad said he intended to continue the efforts made by the late Chek Hashim Sulaima, who was the incumbent Galas state assemblyman.

Pledging to give his best if he were elected, the medical practitioner said he would continue to implement all the programmes drawn up by Chek Hashim.

“I hope the voters in the Galas state constituency  give him a chance and vote for him to continue the PAS rule,” he told reporters after the nomination process.

On the allegation that he had committed ‘khalwat’ (close proximity) which was carried on the website of a political party on Oct 22, Dr Zulkefli said the issue had been resolved when the people who had slandered him had apologised upon realising their mistake                       and he would not take                        legal action against the people concerned. — Bernama

Joseph Kallang on FAS’ radar

KUCHING: The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) is keen to lure midfielder Joseph Kallang back to the state from TTeam Terengganu.

An FAS source said it was likely Sarawak would attempt to sign the talented midfielder to strengthen the Crocs for the 2011 Mleague.

Kallang still has a one-year contract to run with T-Team.

“Should Terengganu FA agree to release him, we will definitely take him back,” the source said.

However, it added, TTeam were not likely to agree to a free transfer for Kallang and the contract between the two FAs on the player’s future movement had to be studied thoroughly.

“Should we take him back, we would have to pay all his one-year wage to Terengganu under the contract” Kallang,

22, who played for the East coast team in the Super League this year, has helped Terengganu retain their 2010 Sukma football team gold medal in Melaka, beating Selangor in the final.

Together with Kallang on FAS wanted list is Rezal Jalil, son of former Crocs captain and coach Jalil Ramli.
Talks are rife that Rezal wants to follow in his father’s footsteps by donning state colours.

It is understand the potential midfielder, currently attached to the Police team, is contract-free and will not sign any extension.

“We’ll try to get him for selection and if possible, bring him into the team as well.”

Rezal caught the eyes of the coaches during his stint with the Police.

He also played (on loan) to Terengganu and managed to impress coach Irfan Bakti.

However, Jalil still has the final say on whether his son plays for Sarawak or some other teams.

Meanwhile, a one-week selection, headed by coach Mohd Zaki Sheikh Ahmad, is being held to pick players for the Crocs in the 2011 Mleague.

The Sarawak Cup players named for trials are Aidil Mohammed, Ahmad Takbie (Mukah), Hafizal Marzuki, Azmie Kifli, Rafizan Razali and Remenor Pit (DBKU), Mohd Kahiroazlin Sahari (BDR FC), Mohd Hairi Hazli Jusuf (Sibu), Hairul Gadafi Harun, Hamidin Manaf, Mohd Zulrizal Tuah, Mohd Fairul Kadir (Miri), Abdul Nasir Ahmad (Kuching), Ramfazirul Ramlan, Rosbee (Betong), Doreen Untong (Bintulu) and Sulaiman Ahat (Limbang).

Battle line drawn, three-cornered contest in Batu Sapi by-election

SANDAKAN: As expected, the Batu Sapi by-election will see a three-cornered fight involving Barisan Nasional (BN), Sabah-based opposition party Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

BN’s Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) is up against SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee, who is a former Sabah chief minister, and PKR Tuaran division chief and prominent lawyer Ansari Abdullah.

The list of candidates was announced by returning officer Mohamad Hamsan Awang Supain, who is also Sandakan Municipal Council secretary, at the nomination centre, Sandakan Community Hall.

Mohamad Hamsan accepted the papers of all three candidates as there were no issues raised during the one-hour objection period.

Ansari was the first to arrive at the nomination centre and handed in his nomination papers at 9.08am, followed by Yong at 9.09am and Linda Tsen three minutes later.

About 1,000 supporters from all parties gathered in this coastal town since sunrise before going to the nomination centre.

They were shouting slogans but maintained discipline.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman led the BN supporters and Tsen to the nomination centre.

Also present were PBS president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, MIC president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu, Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, PPP president Datuk M Kayveas and other representatives of BN component parties.

The PKR camp was led by its president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, DAP deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw and PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali, while Yong, the SAPP candidate, led a small group of supporters.

Tsen when later approached by reporters, pledged that if she is chosen, she would work hard and do her best to carry on the good work of BN.

Yong, meanwhile, praised the Election Commission for handling the nomination process smoothly.

“We thank the Election Commission and its officers for all the preparations made. There were no problems and no objections.

“As for our campaign, we will highlight issues such as unemployment, poverty, land, rising cost of goods and empty promises made (by the government)… We will change all that to return honour and autonomy to the people of Sabah through Batu Sapi,” he said.

Ansari said the Batu Sapi contest was a chance for PKR to have a member of parliament from Sabah, adding that his campaign would also focus on the issue of poverty of the Bumiputeras here.

He also claimed that SAPP is “not a real opposition party, but an ‘independent’ party”.

The Batu Sapi parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent and two-term MP, Datuk Edmund Chong, in a road accident on Oct 9.

Chong won the seat in the 2008 general election by a 3,708-vote majority, defeating independent candidate Dr Chung Kong Wing.

Chong polled 9,479 votes against Dr Chung’s 5,771.

He won the same seat in the 2004 general election unopposed.

Batu Sapi has 25,582 voters, of whom 24,047 are ordinary voters and 1,535 postal voters. Muslim Bumuiputeras comprise 15,099 or 59.02 per cent of the voters, non-Muslim Bumiputeras 689 (2.69 per cent), Chinese 9,737 (38.06 per cent) and others, 57 (0.22 per cent). — Bernama

‘Low water level not caused by the filling of Bakun Dam’

SIBU: The impoundment of water for Bakun Hydroelectric Dam did not cause the level downstream to reach record low and disrupt river travel.

Divisional engineer of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Ting Sing Kwong, told The Borneo Post yesterday that there had been really bad droughts even before the building of the dam.

Although the worst has not happened, he said his department was keeping a close watch on the river and checking the daily water level in the morning and afternoon.

“The water level readings have remained the same in most places over the last few days.”

In Song, for example, he said the reading was 3.35 metres above sea level on Monday morning. On Tuesday morning, it reached 4.05 metres.

In Julau, it was 1.80 metres on Monday morning and at 2.30am on Tuesday.

In Sibu, it was 0.09 metres on Monday morning and 0.47 metres on Tuesday morning.

Belaga had 35.48 metres on Tuesday morning.

“On Monday morning, it was 36.57 metres. In Kapit, it was at 3.62 metres on Monday afternoon, and on
Tuesday morning, it was 3.40 metres.”

It is low tide the last few days in the morning.

Ting said they had received feedback from residents in upper Rajang.

“They’ve confirmed that the water level has not reached the lowest in history.”

In Sibu, the water board is also monitoring the water level closely.

Its general manager, Daniel Wong Park Ing, said there was no problem at all in water treatment and the pumping of river water for the purpose.

He confirmed that the salty sea water had not seeped in to the point where they drew water.

“Water usage has slightly increased in the current drought, but we can cope.”

Wong called on consumers not to worry about the water supply although the water level was low now.
“The level might be low, but it has not reached a critical point.”

He said the water level in Rajang River had never reached such a critical level before, and their drawing of water had always been a smooth process.

What if the water level reaches the warning level? Wong asked the consumers not to worry if it happened.

“We can switch the pump off for a few hours. We have a reservoir large enough to supply the water at such crucial moment.”

He said after a few hours, the water level would rise during high tide, and they could start pumping again.

“But I must stress that the critical moment has never happened. Not even in the current situation and not even when the reading of the river water level was at the lowest point before.”

There has been rain on some days in Central Sarawak but that has not been sufficient enough to raise the river water level.

Penakungan Bakun diteruskan

Sungai Rajang semakin cetek hingga menyebabkan kos pengangkutan meningkat tiga kali ganda

BN confident of retaining Batu Sapi

KOTA KINABALU: Barisan National Sabah secretary Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan is confident that the BN will retain Batu Sapi in the by-election.

“Insyah Allah (God willing) Barisan Nasional will win and I would like to ask the voters in Batu Sapi to use this by-election as a strong signal from the people of Sabah to our Prime Minister.

“We need to let our Prime Minister know that the people of Sabah agree with the Government Transformation Program (GTP) and Economic Transformation Program (ETP) which he announced recently,” Rahman said when met by reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf on Yayasan Sabah Shipping to collaborate with Alam Maritim Resources to explore oil and gas opportunities in Sabah waters.

According to Rahman, Sabahans must use this chance to give the Prime Minister a clear signal for him to continue transforming the  economy and government.

He added that there is no better chance for the people in Sabah to express their support and that “we want the BN’s win to be an absolute decision because it is important for us to give support and confidence to the Prime Minister for him to continue the transformation.”

“If there are changes like a victory for opposition in this by-election, nothing much will happen. Firstly, the federal government will still be under Barisan National. It’s a mid-term election anyway so we have to be smart and think smart.

“If we were to give this opportunity to the opposition, they are not capable of looking after the interests of the voters in Batu Sapi as they are in disarray.  I believe so.

“I have seen how SAPP members of parliament in parliament, they just talk, they cannot even convince the government on what to do in the areas they are representing.

“So we do not want Batu Sapi, which is developing very fast, to fall into such a situation,” Rahman said.

But he said BN did not want to say that the by-election would be an easy job and they would continue to go down to Batu Sapi.

“I will personally go down there tomorrow with the Chief Minister to make sure our officers are working day and night to ensure all voters will be told about BN’s election manifesto,” he said.

Commenting on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s plans to come in to talk with Datuk Yong Teck Lee about a possible work-together for the election, Rahman said he doubted SAPP would join hands with Pakatan Rakyat.

“I have told many friends that I expect SAPP will not compromise because the very existence of SAPP is based on fact, that is it will not bow down to influences and powers of peninsula-based political parties.

“So when Datuk Anwar tries to discuss with Datuk Yong on a possible partnership, deep down in my heart I thought that it would be a waste of time because SAPP is not interested to work with Pakatan Rakyat to stand against Barisan National in this coming Batu Sapi by-election,” he said.

However, Rahman said BN was prepared to face this by-election even if it was a three-cornered or two-cornered fight.

“But I have been told that more than 30 nomination forms have been taken and I think that there will be many more independent candidates who think they can win, will appear during the nomination,” he said.

Uggah: BN has concrete plan

Govt carries on with solving problems even in Bandar Kuching

KUCHING: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government will continue to implement development projects in Bandar Kuching despite having lost the seat in two consecutive elections to the DAP.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas said it was evident the government of the day had all the policies in place to address and solve problems from the ground.

“Even though Kuching is under DAP, I want to make it very clear that BN has a concrete plan to solve the people’s problems.

“We have the finance… and we are always solving problems. We don’t just talk. We act and we walk the talk,” he told journalists after inspecting the newly completed Sungai Padungan Phase II project near the Hockien Garden at Jalan Padungan here yesterday.

The RM16 million project was completed on Sept 25. It took the contractor 13 months to enlarge the concrete drainage from three metres to nine metres wide.

Uggah pointed out the extended drainage had been ‘tested over time’ and it would help reduce the flooding problem in the area.

“As there is a big catchment area in Kenyalang Park and Jalan Mendu, the water flows up there. This is why we implemented the project… to relieve people from flood problem in this area.”

He hoped that the opposition would not capitalise on this issue to gain political mileage, particularly in view of the approaching state election.

“This (drainage) is a big problem here so we are solving it. I hope DAP will not politicise this. I am very happy the project is completed as scheduled.

“This also indicates that DAP is just doing the talking while Barisan Nasional came up with a solid plan and implemented it. This reflects our concern on the problems of the people,” he said.

Uggah added that Sungai Padungan Phase II was not the only drainage enhancement projects taking place in the city.

Earlier on, he also visited two project sites at Sungai Bintangor and Sungai Lajim in Satok.

“We will try our best to put in the capacity we have. And there is a big flood mitigation project for Kuching.”

While lauding the contractor for completing the project of Sungai Padungan Phase II on time, he thanked Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for its co-operation to make the project a success.

Among those present at the site visit was MBKS mayor James Chan.

Tamatkan perang psikologi

BN to get bigger win – political activist

KOTA KINABALU: Less than three years after steering the state Barisan Nasional (BN) to a landslide victory in the 2008 general election, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman faces another tough battle to convince voters to rally behind the ruling coalition, this time in a parliamentary by-election.

Musa, who was named the Batu Sapi by-election director for BN yesterday, had proved his mettle and remarkable “political touch” when he led the state ruling coalition in making almost a clean sweep, securing 24 of the 25 parliamentary seats and 59 of the 60 state seats at stake.

Hence, the Sibuga assemblyman had created a history of sorts in the state’s political arena and many BN leaders acknowledged this excellent achievement, so much so that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak fondly tagged Sabah as the “fixed deposit” for the ruling coalition.

“Musa is a superb and shrewd politician…not many people expected the Chief Minister to lead Sabah BN to that kind of victory in the last elections against the odds, but he did it in style,” said local social and political activist Datuk Patrick Sindu here yesterday.

“Despite the numerous challenges facing the state BN at that time, including the allocation of seats, he still managed to form a formidable team…obviously he has the leadership skills to do that.”

Sindu said Musa’s appointment as BN’s Batu Sapi by-election director and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan as his deputy was a wise move, which would make it hard for the opposition, namely Sabah

Progressive Party (SAPP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to wrest the seat.

“I won’t be surprised if BN retains the seat with a bigger majority in this by-election,” he said, adding that the split opposition was good news for BN.

SAPP and PKR have already decided to field candidates for the by-election, and both parties are confident of notching up good results.

Sindu, however, believed the combined forces of Musa and Pairin would inject the necessary impetus for the BN election machinery to go all out in the contest.

He said the Chief Minister himself had done a lot for the people of Sandakan, including the Batu Sapi constituency.

“Under Musa’s leadership, Sandakan has been turned into an educational hub that will provide opportunities to thousands of students or people in the east coast to shine in education, not to mention the infrastructure development and his competency in managing the state’s economy,” he added.

The by-election is called following the death of its incumbent MP Datuk Edmund Chong Ket Wah in a road accident on Oct 9.

Chong won the seat in the 2008 general election by a 3,708-majority, defeating independent candidate Dr Chung Ong Wing. Chong polled 9,479 votes against Dr Chung’s 5,771.

Batu Sapi has 25,582 voters, comprising 24,047 ordinary voters and 1,535 postal voters, with 15,099 or 59.02 per cent of the voters being Muslim Bumiputeras, 689 non-Muslim Bumiputeras (2.69 per cent), 9,737 Chinese (38.06 per cent) and others, 57 (0.22 per cent).

The nomination of candidates for the by-election is on Oct 26 and polling is on Nov 4.

Meanwhile, Gerakan vice-president Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah described the appointment of Musa as BN’s Batu Sapi by-election director as timely and appropriate as he represented a state constituency in Sandakan.

“As Chief Minister, Musa is in a better position to mobilise the BN election machinery and he has a good personal touch with the grassroots in the area,” he said.

Liew, a former Sabah cabinet minister, is also confident of BN retaining the Batu Sapi seat with a bigger majority.

“The late Chong had served the Batu Sapi constituency well, and I’m sure the people there will still remember his good deeds and vote for BN in the by-election,” he said.

As such, he urged the voters in Batu Sapi to fully support the BN candidate for continued development and a better life ahead. – Bernama

Bulan mengandungi perak

- Dpa

Ghostly apparition blamed for car crash

KUCHING: A man claimed he saw a ghostly apparition, which caused him to lose control of his car and crashed along Jalan Puncak Borneo, near here early yesterday.

According to an unnamed relative, the 31-year-old man was heading back to his village around 4.15am when a ‘white figure’ appeared from nowhere and ‘dashed’ across the dark road in front of him.

The sight of the apparition shocked him to the point where he lost control of his Perodua Viva, which overturned on the road and caused the unfortunate driver to sustain serious injuries to his right arm.

Local villagers who heard the crash called for an ambulance to take the victim to the Sarawak General Hospital.

In an unrelated accident, a foreign college student sustained minor injuries to his head and leg following a two-car collision at a traffic light junction along Jalan Song on Tuesday night.

The victim was a passenger in a Perodua Kenari driven by a fellow student when they crashed into the side of a Honda CRV driven by a man around 10.30pm.

According to a witness, the latter vehicle was making a turn from Jalan Song into Taman BDC, while the students were travelling straight along the main road.

The two drivers were not injured in the incident.

District traffic police personnel was present at the scene to investigate the collision and later recorded the statement of both drivers when they lodged a report.

Taib syukur, berterima kasih kepada PM

KUCHING: Ketua Menteri Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud melahirkan rasa syukur dan berterima kasih kepada Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak ketika mengulas mengenai pembentangan Bajet 2011 semalam.

Menurut Taib, Najib amat sensitif terhadap keperluan rakyat Sarawak.

“Alhamdulillah…

Beliau berkata demikian ketika ditemui selepas menghadiri Pertandingan Akhir Bahas Piala Ketua Menteri Sarawak.

Don’t bite the hand that gives you mandate, community leaders told

MIRI: Government-appointed community leaders are agents of change to effect rapid social transformation in rural areas, said Telang Usan assemblyman Lihan Jok.

“The government appointed you because it trusts you can bring progress and development to your people.

“As such, you need to work closely with the government.

“You should not bite the hand that gives you the mandate to lead,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the installation of community leader Penghulu Mering Ibau of Uma Bawang recently.

Baram Orang Ulu paramount chief Temenggong Pahang Ding, SAO Jeffrey Jalong and PBB Telang Usan Women chief Elizabeth Deng were also present.

Lihan said modern community leaders must be able to change with the time and make themselves relevant in order to be effective.

He pointed out that the world was fast changing which was affecting society as never before.

“Community leaders must be open-minded and brace themselves for change in their communities,” he said.

He said in order to be effective agents of change, community leaders must be knowledgeable and be aware of what is going on around them.

Community leaders need also to have proper administrative systems for their respective longhouses or regions, said Lihan.

“At the same time, community leaders must engage intellectuals to work alongside them for the sake of development.”

SPDP puts up united stand for polls

MIRI: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) has decided to put internal conflicts and personal differences aside.

It has submitted its list of candidates for the coming state election to the BN leadership.

Party president Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said there was no more factionalism within the party and urged certain quarters to stop barking up the wrong tree.

“We want to bring the ‘grouping’ issue to a close and the party cannot entertain personal interest but focus on obtaining victory for BN in the upcoming election,” Mawan said after handing over MRP grants to NGOs and longhouses at Miri Resident’s Office yesterday afternoon.

“Therefore, I urged these quarters to put an end to these so called ‘grouping’ and focus on winning all the eight seats for SPDP and state BN,” he added.

The SPDP seats and incumbents are Tasik Biru (Datuk Peter Nansian), Pakan (Dato Sri William Mawan),

Meluan (Datuk Peter Nyarok), Marudi Wong Judat), Ba Kelalan (Sylvester Entri Muran), Batu Danau (Nelson Balang Rinning), Saratok (Paulus Palu Ngumbang) and Bekenu (Rosey Yunus).

Mawan pointed out that the party machinery is all geared up and moving in full swing to face the opposition in the state election.

On the other hand, he said SPDP would not mind swapping seats with other BN component parties under the power-sharing concept to ensure BN wins all seats against the opposition in the coming polls.

It will not insist on fielding candidates in areas which are considered insecure areas for the party, he said.

“We must have an open attitude, and if the party cannot secure the seat, why not we swap with another BN component party to ensure BN win the seat,” he said further.

Also present during the press conference was a political secretary to the Chief Minister, Kijan Toynbee.

UFO sebenarnya belon parti guru
