Menteri letak jawatan selepas komen tugasnya mudah
- AFP

Kallang on Crocs radar despite Turtles rebuff
FAS hopes to strike a deal with Terengganu FA on securing midfielder’s release
KUCHING: The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) has not given up hope yet of signing home-grown talent Joseph Kallang to play for the Crocs in the new season.
FAS’ recent efforts to bring the influential midfielder back from Terengganu to add more bite to Sarawak coach Mohd Zaki Shiekh Ahmad’s squad had been to no avail as the East Coast State FA refused to let him go. Kallang’s contract with the Turtles still has another year to run.
However, it is learnt FAS will be making a second attempt to negotiate Kallang’s return to Sarawak with the Terengganu FA.
A source said the negotiation would focus solely on the remaining oneyear contract and wages.
Although the bargaining is not likely to hold out much of a chance for Kallang’s release, it is understood FAS is not throwing in the towel yet but has instead come up with the offer of a “better deal” to secure the midfielder’s return.
Last week, the Terrengganu FA reportedly made a direct call to a local daily newspaper, confirming it would not release Kallang.
Its president, Che Mat Che Jusoh, said the Sarawakian was still very much needed by the Turtles in the Super League and there were no issues to discuss vis-a-vis Kallang’s release.
A glimmer of hope for the Crocs is that Kallang himself has expressed an interest to return.
Revealing this to the Borneo Post yesterday, he said: “I want to play for the Crocs if they want my service. I still want to don Sarawak colours.”

‘Student caned for different reason’
KUALA LUMPUR: The caning of a boy for bringing non-halal food to school in Kuching took a new twist after the school assistant denied caning the 10-year-old boy for it.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said he had received a report from Sarawak’s Education Department which stated that the school administrator caned the boy for another reason.
“From investigations, it was found that although the boy did bring non-halal food to the school – fried rice with pork sausages – the senior school administrator denied caning the boy for it,” he said when met by reporters at the Parliament lobby here.
Wee also told reporters that there was no written circular to ban students from bringing non-halal food to school.
“However, students should be tolerant and take care of the sensitivities of others,” he added.
On Wednesday (Nov 3), the boy’s mother, Angela Jabing claimed that her 10-year-old son was caned by a school’s senior assistant for bringing non-halal food to school.
She stated that on Oct 15, she had prepared fried rice with non-halal sausages for her son to bring to school for his recess, and was shocked to learn that he was punished and caned 10 times on the palm for bringing the food.
She went to the school to clarify the matter on Oct 19 but was not satisfied with the verbal explanation received and thus demanded for a written explanation.
However, the letter did not answer her question on why her son had to be caned 10 times for just eating fried rice with non-halal sausages.
Angela, who happened to be Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak Women exco member, brought the matter to the knowledge of the local media at a press conference which was also attended by PKR Sarawak Women leaders on Nov 3.
According to Wee, there seemed to be two conflicting reports on the incident now.
Because of this, he said the ministry had instructed for a thorough investigation on the matter and he also hoped the parents can come out and help with the investigation.
He also implied that the case might be ‘politically motivated’. He said: “I understand that the parent has a political background.”
Meanwhile, PKR Sarawak Women will hold another press conference today at the party’s Stampin division office to comment on the latest developments.
Efforts to contact Angela for her response to Wee’s statement were futile as she could not be reached.
A special meeting was also expected to be held today to settle the matter involving all parties concerned, such as the boy’s parents, school board committee, school authority, headmaster, Parent-Teacher Association
(PTA), and the senior assistant.
The timing and the location of the meeting was however not publicly revealed.

BN not into making empty promises — DPM
GALAS: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is not into making empty promises and has always strived to fulfil what has been pledged to the people, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
The claims by the opposition parties, accusing the BN making empty promises, were therefore baseless, he added.
“Kelantan executive council member Datuk Husam Musa, in (a report by) Harakah, accused me of being a ‘munafik’ (hypocrite) because the promise for a bridge in Manik Urai has not yet been fulfilled.
“I would like to stress that the BN does not make empty promises. We will implement the project.
“At that time when we made the promise, the cost of the bridge was only RM7 million but when we called for a tender, it has increased to RM17 million. Although this is a huge amount, we are capable of implementing it.
We have asked the Treasury to make the approval,” he said at the meet-the-people at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina here yesterday.
He said the opposition had also been making similar accusations and raising doubts when he announced the first people’s housing project for Kelantan, costing RM180 million, recently.
“We want to bring development but they want to cast doubts about it; this is ill intention. If one really looks at this, the Kelantan PAS government should be held responsible for not building the bridge in the first place,” he said.
Muhyiddin acknowledged that Kelantan did make some progress but said that most of it was due to the assistance from the federal government.
“I’m aware that in Galas, there is still more to be done but the question is, who is in a better position to fulfil the needs of the people? The PAS government has no money and has to borrow from the federal government,” he said.
He called on the Galas voters to vote wisely come polling day for the constituency’s by-election today.
“We are prepared to bring major changes to Kelantan and a victory for the BN’s candidate today will be a clear sign that Kelantan is ready for such change,” he said.
The by-election, which is called, following the death of incumbent MP Chek Hashim Sulaima on Sept 27, will see a straight fight between BN’s Abdul Aziz Yusoff and PAS’ Dr Zulkefli Mohamed. — Bernama

Govt to act on high price of imported mutton
KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is to meet wholesalers today on the high price of imported Australian mutton which retails at RM19 per kg, RM2 above the ceiling price.
Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday the ministry might review the ceiling retail price of RM17 in view of the high wholesale price for the product.
“Due to the high wholesale price, retailers are forced to sell imported Australian mutton at RM19 per kg,” he told reporters after a visit to the Sentul market here to ensure that controlled items were being sold at the set prices for Deepavali which falls on Friday.
Ismail Sabri expressed satisfaction with the prices of the 14 other controlled items set for 10 days from today in view of the Deepavali festive season.
These items include chicken, local bone-in mutton, chicken eggs, red chillies, tomatoes, Indian small red onions, imported potatoes and Australian dhall.
“We impose price control during festive seasons because traders are likely to raise prices due to the higher demand then.
“I believe the demand for dhall will rise (during the Deepavali season), so we impose the price control,” he said.
Ismail Sabri said 1,600 monitoring officers and 2,000 enforcement officers had been deployed to check on the prices of the controlled items nationwide for the 10 days.
He also reminded traders to display the pink tags for the prices of the controlled items to enable consumers differentiate them from the ordinary goods, saying that offenders would be prosecuted.
He advised the people to lodge reports on any misconduct by traders via the hotline 1-800-88-6800 or email eaduan@kpdnkk.gov.my. — Bernama

Yesterday, he attended his first BN pre-Council meeting, which is usually held a day before the State Legislative Assembly sitting, at the PBB headquarters here.
Dr Rayong has been knocking on BN’s door after he won Engkilili in 2006.
Reached for his comments, Dr Rayong said he was very happy to finally become a BN backbencher.
“The Chief Minister (Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) declared that I am a BN member during the meeting… now that I am accepted into the BN, I can do my work smoothly as people will no longer have doubts over my position,” he said.
Dr Rayong added that his application to join SUPP was approved by the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) last Sept 20.
“From my understanding, there were no objections against me to join SUPP,” he said.
Dr Rayong was formerly the pro tem deputy president of the proposed Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) which had its application turned down by the Registrar of Societies.
In 2006, he stood under the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) ticket and he defeated Jonathan Krai Pilo (BN-SUPP) by a slim 426-vote majority in a straight fight.
After his win, he declared his intention to join the BN and was often seen mingling around with BN leaders.
He was also accorded privileges such as presenting minor rural project (MRP) grants in his constituency.
He had previously submitted his membership application to join SUPP but the move was opposed by several
SUPP leaders in Engkilili, including former assemblyman Toh Heng San who represented the area from 1991 to 2006.
Suggestions then started to surface over possible seat-swapping arrangement with other BN component parties to resolve the problem, but this was also opposed by SUPP leaders in Engkilili.
Last Oct 17, Utusan Borneo reported that Dr Rayong’s SUPP membership application had been accepted and approved.
It quoted SUPP Engkilili secretary Nyambong Maweng as saying that he had received a letter from SUPP headquarters to inform the branch of Dr Rayong’s membership status.
Nyambong claimed that the letter also mentioned that Dr Rayong is the best candidate for BN and SUPP in Engkilili for the state election which is due in nine months time.
